How activated carbon works

Activated carbon has a very large internal pore surface that adsorbs organics, taste and odor compounds and VOCs, and catalytically reduces free chlorine. Chloramine needs longer contact or catalytic grades.

GAC and PAC

GAC is used in fixed-bed pressure filters with backwash, typically in 8×30 or 12×40 mesh sizes. PAC is a fine powder dosed into water ahead of clarification or filtration for seasonal taste, odor and organics events.

Media options

  • Coconut-shell carbon: high microporosity, low dust, suited to chlorine removal and drinking water.
  • Coal-based carbon: wider pore range for larger organic molecules.
  • Catalytic carbon for chloramine where required.
  • Grade selected by iodine number, mesh size and NSF/ANSI 61 certification where available for potable use.

Key features and benefits

  • Protects RO membranes from chlorine damage.
  • Removes taste, odor and colour for drinking and bottled water.
  • Reduces organics and VOCs.
  • Vessels with automatic or manual backwash valves, gauges and sample points.
  • Media supply and replacement under AMC.

Applications

RO pretreatment for brackish and municipal feed, drinking and bottled water, hotels and villas, food and beverage, dialysis pretreatment, and greywater polishing.

Design data we need

Water analysis including free chlorine or chloramine and organics, flow rate and daily volume, and the downstream process (RO, drinking, process). Bed volume and contact time are sized from this data.
